RED BLOOD CELL (ALYX) DONATIONS

alyx doner What does it mean to donate double Red Blood Cells on the Alyx System?
You can give two units of red blood cells and feel twice as good about saving lives. Alyx is a system that collects individual blood components. The new Alyx system specifically collects red blood cells and helps increase the supply of this critically needed blood component. Type 0+ and O- are the best for this type of donation.

In emergency medical situations, red blood cells can mean the difference in life and death, for trauma victims and those undergoing surgery. Red blood cells are also used to treat people with certain types of cancer and sickle cell anemia. Because red blood cells are so essential, they are also the most needed blood component.

Who can donate?
To qualify as a donor, males must be at least 5’1 and weigh at least 130 pounds, females must be at least 5’5 and weigh at least 150 pounds. A typical donation on Alyx takes just 20-25 minutes. Donation interval for Alyx is 112 days or 16 weeks, versus 56 days for whole blood meaning fewer donations per year are needed from a donor. Side affects are minimal, some people may feel a slight tingling in the lips, or a slight chill. The needle used is smaller so most people find it more comfortable, than whole blood donation.
